Travel advice for Rome

Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Travel

• Citizens of EC countries can cross into Italy for as long as they wish. Citizens of other countries must have a passport for Italy and Rome travel. Do you have yours?
• If you purchased traveler's checks, have you recorded the check numbers and stored the documentation separately from the checks?
• Did you pack your camera and an extra set of camera batteries, and purchase enough film? If you packed film in your checked baggage, did you invest in protective pouches to shield film from airport X-rays?
• Do you have a safe, accessible place to store money?
• Did you bring your ID cards that could entitle you to discounts, such as AAA and AARP cards or student IDs?
• Do you have an extra pair of glasses or contact lenses?
• Do you have your credit card PINs?
• If you have an E-ticket, do you have documentation?
• Did you leave a copy of your itinerary with someone at home?
• Did you check to see if any Rome travel advisories have been issued by the U.S. State Department (http://travel.state.gov/travel_warnings.html) regarding Rome travel?
• Do you have the address and phone number of your country's embassy with you?

Suggestions

It is advisable to keep a photocopy of your passport or ID card with you and leave the original ones in the hotel or in a security box for the rest of your stay. These copies can be useful if you lose your bag or you are robbed. In that case you can show the copies to the police at the time of report.

Anything to declare?

Travellers from UE Countries. The European Union Area makes up a common space where people and goods are free to come and go. Travellers coming from one of these Countries to Italy can easily bring goods, bought in normal stores, coming in or going out, without any limit or formal measures. Although products with taxes on manufacturing and consuming can circulate within certain limits.

Going out of Italy there is no limit of value. Therefore there can be limit measures arranged by the Country where the tourist is coming from. It is possible to get the VAT rebate (Added Value Tax) for goods bought in Italy: you have to ask the seller for the invoice and send it back as you have got it checked at Customs while you are leaving the Country. We remind you that the merchandise has to always be shown at Customs. Concerning the import of consumer goods, travellers who carry the goods with their personal baggage can benefit an exemption from customs taxes (on these goods) on two conditions: the import has to be for personal purpose not for trading and their value must not exceed € 175.00, this limit is reduced to € 90.00 for children under 15. Some kinds of goods (alcohol , tobacco, and so on..), are exempt from tax within limited quantities. For those kinds of goods such as alcohol, tobacco, perfumes, and so on.., the exemption is granted to one kind only. The value of those kinds listed before is not be considered in the total value of 1,565 ECU of the objects to be exempted.

Penalties

Over the permitted limits the goods have to be declared at Customs. On the quantity exceeding the exemption you will have to pay customs taxes. Travellers who carry with them inside their baggage consumer goods or objects of a value exceeding the one allowed with the exemption without declaring it at Customs, apart from paying customs taxes will be considered committing a smuggling crime and will be punished with a fine worth from twice up to ten times the value of taxes. In case the goods are to be confiscated, they can be bought again paying, besides the fine and the customs taxes, a price equal to their value at the moment of buying them.
